Shaya and |Shinya / Siyu Fort
Founded in the 15th century it was famous for its centre of Islamic scholarship and crafts. Faza The biggest settlement with a chequered history. Faza was almost completely destroyed by Pate in the 13th Century. It is known that the Portuguese chopped off the sheikhs head and preserved here. Nabahani Ruins A settlement that is slowly vanishing under a riot of tropical vegetation and banana plantations. Lamu Fort
This castle was built buy the Sultan of Pate from 1810 and completed in 1823. From 1910 to `1984 it was used as a prison. It now houses the islands library which holds the best collections of Swahili poetry and Lamu reference in Kenya.
