Lamu Main Jetty Distance –
4kmsDuration 1.5 to 3hrs
Starting at the main jetty head north to the Lamu Museum – The best museum in town is housed in a grand Swahili warehouse on the waterfront..
From there head onto Kenyatta road passing an original Swahili Well and into the alleys towards the Swahili House Museum – A preserved Swahili house tucked away to the side of Yumbe House which is just beautiful.
Once you have had your fill of domestic insights, you will be led to the main street.
Once you have hit the main square and arrived at The Fort look to your right and see the crumbles remains of the 14th century Pwani Mosque – one of Lamu’s oldest buildings – an arabic inscription is still visible on the wall till date!
From here you will head round and browse the vastly covered Lamu Market –A good chance to see what ingredients used to prepare the local Swahili delicacy and experience local culture first hand and make way to Riyadha mosque – Centre of Lamu’s religious scene
You will then make way to the German Post office museum – the door is an amazing example of the unique Swahili wood carving . The old post office is now a third-rate museum exhibiting old photographs of Mombasa and scant memorabilia from that fleeting period when Lamu had the chance of being spelt with an umlaut.
If you are feeling the pace rest and enjoy the breeze on the Baraza ya Wazee outside the minarets of Shiathna-Asheri Mosque.
Finally head up to Harambee Avenue and make way to the Jetty to board the boat back to resort/hotel or villa
